"Westman Island Ferry Cannot Use New Harbor
The Westman Island ferry Herjólfur cannot sail to Landeyjarhöfn harbor any longer, according to captain Ívar Gunnlaugsson, as the harbor has become too shallow because of the sand and volcanic matter that gets carried into it.
On the ferry’s last trip it became obvious as to how shallow the harbor had become, both while sailing in and out of it, and so the ferry’s speed had to be reduced, visir.is reports.
Therefore, Herjólfur’s trip to the Westman Islands from Landeyjahöfn this morning was postponed for an unspecified length of time, a few days even.
Representatives of Eimskip, which is responsible for ferry operations, the Icelandic Road Administration and the Icelandic Maritime Administration are being convened to discuss the problem.
The sand pump vessel, which has been pumping sand out of the harbor temporarily, is now engaged in a project in the West Fjords.
The solution may therefore be to resume ferry connections to the Westman Islands from Thorlákshöfn while the sand pump vessel is unavailable, but according to visir.is, no agreement has been reached with the harbor authorities in Thorlákshöfn yet.
Herjólfur used to sail to the Westman Islands from Thorlákshöfn but relocated to Landeyjahöfn after its opening in July. The new sailing route shortened the trip from three hours to half an hour." (http://www.icelandreview.com/icelandrev ... _id=367234)

"Tides Determine Westman Islands Ferry Tours
According to a schedule issued by the Icelandic Road Administration yesterday, Herjólfur, the Westman Islands ferry, will sail between the islands and the new harbor Landeyjahöfn three times a day during high tide in the coming days—spring tide is coming up. However, the first ferry ride this morning was canceled due to bad weather.
Captain Ívar Gunnlaugsson expressed his concern that Landeyjahöfn had become too shallow for Herjólfur as sand and volcanic matter is carried into the harbor and so the ferry did not leave the Westman Islands yesterday.
Minister for Internal Affairs Ögmundur Jónasson pointed out that unusual and unmanageable circumstances are causing the disruption in Landeyjahöfn, referring to the eruption in Eyjafjallajökull and an unusual wind direction which caused more matter to be carried into the harbor than expected, Morgunbladid reports.
The Icelandic Road Administration met with representatives of Eimskip, the ferry’s operator, and the Icelandic Maritime Administration to find a solution to the problem. One idea was to put the old harbor in Thorlákshöfn back into use but, according to Morgunbladid, that idea was dismissed.
The Road Administration stated a sand-pumping vessel will arrive at Landeyjahöfn on Thursday. The Westman Islands maritime pilot measured the depth of Landeyjahöfn yesterday and concluded that only around 2,000 cubic meters of matter has to be removed for Herjólfur’s sailing route to be considered safe."
